With the emergence of the highly contagious Omicron variant, COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations in the U.S. have reached a record high. Public health experts hold that it is time to upgrade masks.

U.S. President Biden declared at the White House on January 13 that the federal government would increase the supply of masks to curb the spread of the Omicron variant in the U.S. The next day, CDC updated the mask guidelines and recommended the use of the American standard N95 and Chinese standard KN95 masks for better protection.

Earlier on August 13 last year, the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council of China released the new version of the Mask Wearing Guidelines for the General Public and Occupational Groups that are at High Risk for COVID-19 Infection, in which it highlighted the importance of wearing highly protective masks in crowded places and other high-risk situations.

What are highly protective masks, after all? Medical masks are.

Medical masks are well-fitting masks made of one or more types of fabrics that can block virus aerosols and virus-containing particles under respiratory airflow. They are personal protective gear that are able to filtrate 95% of non-oily particles and is commonly used to protect the wearer from airborne infectious diseases.
