The Five-year Plan for the Medical Equipment Industry Leads to the Upgrade of Medical Dressings

A few days ago, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China solicitated public comments on the Medical Equipment Industry Development Plan (2021-2025), in which it pointed out that the global healthcare industry is transitioning from disease diagnosis and treatment to comprehensive healthcare. Increasing awareness of health management has spawned the demand for ultra-large-scale, multi-level and rapidly upgrading medical equipment, and has kept expanding the market of high-end medical equipment. Meanwhile, driven by the vigorous development of new forms of healthcare services such as telemedicine and mobile healthcare, China's medical equipment industry has ushered in a golden period of technological breakthroughs and upgrade.

The new five-year plan envisions major breakthroughs in key components and materials and safe and reliable performance of high-end medical equipment that is up to international standards in terms of product performance and quality by 2025. The vision for 2020 is to establish a global  high-end medical equipment R & D, manufacturing and application base in China and provide strong support for China's healthcare service and health security system catching up with those of high-income countries.

According to the statistics of BMI Research, from 2014 to 2019, the global medical dressing market had experienced an increase from US$11.1 billion to US$12.483 billion, of which high-end medical dressings accounted for nearly a half and reached US$6.09 billion in 2019. The high-end medical dressing market is projected to reach US$7.015 billion by 2022, with a CAGR that is much higher than that of the overall market.

Silicone gel dressing is a typical high-end dressing that is mainly used for long-term care of open wounds such as chronic wounds caused by decubitus ulcer and pressure ulcer. It is also effective in scar repair after invasive surgery and plastic surgery. As a skin-friendly adhesive, silicone gel is not only widely used in high-end wound dressings, but is also often used in medical tapes that fix medical devices such as catheters and needles onto the human body. With the vigorous development of medical wearable devices in recent years, high-viscosity and hypoallergenic silicone gel tapes have been more and more frequently used in small diagnostic equipment for long-term wear on the human body.

Organic silicone gel is superior to traditional adhesive in many respects, as shown in SILPURAN®, the silicone gel series produced by WACKER CHEMICALS, Germany, the second largest silicone manufacturer in the world.

1. No Secondary Damage

When changing dressings, silicone gel with a soft texture can be easily removed and does not stick to the wound surface or damage the surrounding skin and the newly formed granulation tissue. Compared with acrylic and thermosol adhesives, silicone adhesives have a very gentle adhesion force on the skin, which can minimize secondary damage to fresh wounds and the surrounding skin and shorten would healing time markedly while improving comfort for patients, simplifying wound treatment and reducing the workload of medical staff.

2. Hypoallergenic

For a pure formula without any plasticizers, silicone gels are safe, hypoallergenic and skin-friendly materials for the elderly and children with fragile skin and even newborns with very tender skin.

3. Excellent Gas Permeability and Water Vapor Transmission

The unique Si-O-Si structure gives silicone water-repellent properties as well as excellent carbon dioxide gas and water vapor permeability. This unique "breathability" is very close to the metabolism of human skin. Skin-like silicone gel adheres to the skin and provides suitable humidity for a closed environment.
